Caregiver In Area Accused Of Stealing Thousands Of Dollars, Jewelry

A woman caring for the elderly in Dutchess County is facing a host of charges after allegedly stealing from the people she was tasked with caring for in Milan.

Susan Niekrewicz, of Elizaville, was arrested on Thursday, Jan. 10 following an ongoing investigation into the exploitation of vulnerable adults, according to Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Capt. John Watterson. The bulk of the thefts took place in northern Dutchess, he noted.

According to investigators, Niekrewicz allegedly stole several thousand dollars, as well as jewelry and other personal belongings from a sick adult that she was caring for in Milan. She is also under investigation in connection to more thefts from at least one other elderly victim who lives in Rhinebeck. Those charges are pending.

Watterson said that some of the stolen property in each case has been recovered and the thefts are alleged to have taken place for the entirety of 2018.

Niekrewicz, 50, was arrested on Thursday, Jan. 10 and charged with grand larceny and endangering the welfare of an incompetent or disabled adult, both felonies. Following her arraignment, Niekrewicz was released to the supervision of probation.
